NiDCOM passport innovations

NiDCOM praises new passport application innovations, emphasising improved services for Nigerians abroad starting November 1.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has expressed its support for the recent innovations in the passport application and collection processes initiated by the Ministry of Interior, led by Hon Olubunmi Tunji Ojo. These changes aim to enhance efficiency and accessibility for Nigerians living abroad.

Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman and CEO of NiDCOM, commended the Ministry’s efforts, stating that the changes have generated excitement among the Nigerian diaspora.

“Nigerians abroad have long anticipated improvements in accessing passport services,” she noted. “This revolution in the application and collection process is a much-needed change that will ease the burden on our citizens globally.”

Dabiri-Erewa further highlighted NiDCOM’s readiness to support these reforms through advocacy and awareness campaigns. “Advocacy is at the heart of NiDCOM’s work,” she affirmed.

“We are prepared to collaborate fully with the Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service to ensure that Nigerians in the Diaspora are well-informed about these developments and continue to be a bridge between Nigeria and its diaspora.”

In response, Minister Tunji-Ojo reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to a collaborative approach, emphasising the importance of establishing a structured partnership through a Tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). “Our goal is to ensure effective communication and engagement with Nigerians abroad,” he stated.

“We look forward to a strong collaboration, particularly in advocacy and sensitisation, to make these reforms successful.”

Among the key innovations is the introduction of Contactless Biometrics, designed to streamline the process for Nigerians abroad.

This option eliminates the need for long travels, reduces hotel costs, and helps prevent absenteeism from work. Available for renewals and for individuals aged 18 and over, the Contactless option will launch on November 1 in Canada, November 15 in the United States, and December 1 in other countries.

With these advancements, NiDCOM aims to ensure that the Nigerian diaspora experiences a more efficient and supportive passport application process, fostering stronger ties between Nigeria and its citizens abroad.
