Lagos State launches free HIV screening at the 2024 Trade Fair, providing crucial health resources for exhibitors and attendees to promote public health.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Lagos State Government, via the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), has rolled out free HIV screening and counselling services for exhibitors and visitors at the ongoing Y2024 Trade Fair at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos.

Running from 1 to 10 November, this year’s trade fair is expected to attract a significant number of attendees, with participants both from Nigeria and overseas.

The initiative was launched with the support of Lagos State’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Hamzat, who formally opened the event.

Following his inspection of the LSACA booth at the Lagos pavilion, Dr. Hamzat praised the agency’s commitment to reducing HIV transmission within the state, recognising its vital role in providing sustainable healthcare solutions.

He highlighted the importance of accessible health services to improve productivity and quality of life in Lagos.

Addressing fair attendees, Dr. Hamzat encouraged all participants to make use of the free screening to understand their HIV status, emphasising early detection’s role in timely medical intervention.

He also advocated for healthy lifestyle choices, stressing that a proactive approach to health is key to overall wellbeing.

Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, CEO of LSACA, outlined the purpose behind this initiative. She explained that free HIV screenings at the fair are part of the state’s wider efforts to promote accessible public health services.

The agency aims to provide a convenient and supportive environment for HIV testing, helping to prevent the spread of the virus through early diagnosis and education. According to Dr. Animashaun, this programme will be available throughout the duration of the trade fair.

LSACA has been at the forefront of Lagos State’s HIV/AIDS control efforts. In recent years, it has expanded its Anti-Retroviral Therapy Programmes, alongside raising awareness about HIV through community outreach and youth-focused events.

These initiatives, including free HIV testing and counselling, have improved access to healthcare services for Lagos residents.

The current screening programme offers attendees valuable resources on HIV awareness and prevention, promoting safe practices to curb the virus’s spread within the community.

Dr. Animashaun added that the LSACA team remains committed to equipping people with the knowledge and tools needed for a healthier society.

The initiative reinforces Lagos State’s dedication to advancing public health by offering critical support services and fostering greater awareness among residents and visitors alike.
