[dropcap]T[/dropcap]ech behemoth Google has announced the latest iteration of its highly regarded AI-focused startup accelerator program in Africa.

The initiative, unveiled on Thursday, aims to empower early-stage African companies by providing them with significant resources and mentorship to foster growth and innovation in the artificial intelligence sector.
The program specifically targets seed-to-series A startups that possess live, market-ready products. A key criterion for selection is that at least one founder must be of African descent, underscoring Google’s commitment to supporting local talent and expertise.
Furthermore, participating startups must demonstrate a clear commitment to the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies.
Successful applicants will gain access to a comprehensive package designed to accelerate their development. This includes up to a substantial $350,000 in Google Cloud credits, providing vital infrastructure for their technological advancements.
Beyond financial support, the program offers invaluable dedicated mentorship from a network of Google experts and seasoned industry professionals.
Participants will also benefit from access to a global network of investors and strategic partners, opening doors for future funding and collaborations.
To further equip these startups for success, the accelerator will feature intensive workshops covering critical areas such as technology development, product strategy, effective leadership, and the practical implementation of AI solutions.
Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa at Google, emphasised the transformative potential of African startups, stating, “Startups are Africa’s problem solvers. With the right resources, they can scale their impact far beyond local communities. This program reflects our belief that AI can be transformative when shaped by those who understand the context deeply.”
The 2025 cohort will build upon the success of previous participants, such as Crop2Cash, a West African agritech firm. Crop2Cash leverages AI to onboard smallholder farmers, establish their financial identities, and provide them with access to credit, traceable payment systems, and productivity-enhancing tools.
Google highlighted that such initiatives are instrumental in unlocking economic opportunities for farmers who have historically been excluded from formal financial systems, showcasing the power of African innovation in addressing local challenges.
Since its inception in 2018, Google’s African startup accelerator has played a pivotal role in the continent’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.
To date, the program has supported 140 startups spanning 17 African nations. These alumni have collectively raised over $300 million in funding and have been responsible for the creation of more than 3,000 jobs, with many evolving into regional and global leaders in their respective fields.
Google reiterated its conviction that African founders, deeply embedded in their local contexts, are uniquely positioned to harness the transformative potential of AI to address the continent’s specific needs and drive economic progress.
