A devastating flood in Mokwa, Niger State, following a torrential downpour, has reportedly claimed an unspecified number of lives, with residents fearing the death toll could exceed 50 as homes are submerged and a major road cut off

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]n unspecified number of people have reportedly lost their lives in a devastating flood that swept through Mokwa town, the headquarters of Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, following a torrential downpour on Wednesday night, May 28, 2025.

Residents fear the death toll could be significant, with some estimating as many as 50 people may have died, while others suggest the number could be even higher, as many residents, including women and children, are still missing.

The flood, triggered by several hours of continuous heavy rainfall, submerged numerous houses and properties worth millions of naira, sweeping away residents as they slept.

Reports from the ground indicate that the critical road linking the northern and southern parts of Nigeria through Mokwa has also been cut off by the deluge, severely impacting transportation and rescue efforts.

Mohammed Usman, a resident, confirmed that several bodies have already been recovered from the surging waters, but many others remain unaccounted for, particularly in areas where homes were completely submerged.

Dr. Ibrahim Audu Hussaini, Director of Information and Special Duties at the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident to Daily Trust. He stated that the agency is currently gathering details about the extent of the disaster and will make its findings known in due course.
