The declaration was made on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Oluwo’s palace by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and his wife, Abiwumi.

During the meeting, Oba Akanbi emphasised that the title “Alaafin” is the most supreme among all traditional titles in Yorubaland, originally borne by Oduduwa descendants.

He stated, “I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to the Alaafin. Alaafin will continue to be Alaafin because that is the title that Oramiyan adopted, and I will also adopt the saying.

Henceforth, I will also want to be called Alaafin of Iwo and we will inform the government about it.”

The monarch praised the visit of the Alaafin of Oyo as a significant moment in fostering stronger bonds between the two ancient towns.

“I thank Alaafin for the visit, for this will boost the relationship between the two towns. With the humility and exposure of the Alaafin, Oyo would witness peace and unprecedented development, and the existing good relationship between the towns will continue to flourish.”

Oba Akanbi also criticised the conduct of some traditional rulers who sponsor negative media coverage against fellow monarchs. He urged a spirit of unity and collaboration for the advancement of the Yoruba kingdom.

Responding, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, expressed optimism about improved cooperation between the two domains.

He noted, “Iwo and Oyo have been enjoying good relationship for years, even with my predecessor, and I want that relationship to continue.”

He further encouraged the people of Iwo to rally behind their monarch in harmony, saying true progress is only achievable when leaders and subjects work with one heart and open minds.
