Obi of Onitsha suspends

The Obi of Onitsha has suspended the Otu Odu president, citing insubordination and high-handedness, as traditional authority asserts control

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, has suspended the president of the prestigious Otu Odu women society, Enyi Florence Osoka, over allegations of insubordination, autocratic leadership, and a crisis of confidence in the organisation.

The suspension followed a high-level meeting held at Ime Obi Onicha between the Obi-in-Council and the Otu Odu executive.

According to a detailed 14-page statement signed by the monarch, the decision was based on disobedience to previous judgements delivered by the Obi-in-Council, which had sought to resolve internal disputes within the society.

The statement referenced two key cases Enyi Rita Areh vs President of Otu Odu Onicha and the Otu Odu USA Crisis in which rulings were either ignored or overridden by the Otu Odu leadership.

The Council concluded that Osoka’s failure to enforce compliance with the rulings amounted to a breach of traditional authority.

“Being the second time within about eighteen months that due directives by the constituted traditional authority of our kingdom have been disregarded and overridden by the Executive Committee, a fine of six million naira (₦6,000,000) is imposed on the Executive Committee,” the Obi declared.

The fine is to be paid into the Onitsha Development Trust Fund within a week, with proof submitted to the Chief of Staff of Ime Obi.

In addition, the Obi mandated the Otu Odu leadership to issue a formal apology to the traditional ruling council.

He emphasised the need for discipline and order within Otu Odu Onicha, describing the leadership’s conduct as a threat to the unity and cultural integrity of the kingdom.

“For repeated failure to guide the Executive Committee properly… and to engender a softer environment without compromising discipline and good order in the society, Enyi Ugobueze Florence Osoka is hereby suspended temporarily as President of Otu Odu Onicha with immediate effect and until further notice,” the monarch stated.

According to Igwe Achebe, the Otu Odu executive had justified its harsh style of leadership with long suspensions and heavy penalties, creating an atmosphere of fear and submission. Yet, the same body repeatedly disregarded royal rulings.

“The Executive Committee appears to be stealthily and rapidly leading Otu Odu Onicha towards becoming an independent and autonomous body outside the responsibility of the constituted traditional authority of Otu Odu Onicha. This cannot be and must come to a halt,” Igwe Achebe warned.

The ruling underscores the Obi’s firm resolve to assert cultural oversight over traditional institutions and prevent power drift within community structures.
