Ogbonna prison robbery truth

Ogbonna Ogbojionu prison robbery truth debunks viral claims, detailing the shocking events, murder, and confessions behind the notorious 2000 ELF station crime

Ogbonna prison robbery truth has recently become a topic of debate following viral claims of wrongful imprisonment.

Contrary to these narratives, official records present a very different and disturbing account of events.

Ogbonna Ogbojionu was convicted on 14 January 2003 by the Ogun State High Court and sentenced to death for his involvement in a violent armed robbery.

This crime occurred on 3 October 2000, when a gang of robbers stormed an ELF petrol station along Abeokuta-Lagos road at night. Armed with iron rods, they overpowered two security guards.

One of them, Yusuf Akanni, survived with a broken femur and head wounds, while the other, Moses Bankole, tragically died at the scene.

The robbers, including Ogbonna, stole a 10 KVA Lister generator. Ogbonna, a generator technician, detached the machine from its mount, confirming his active involvement.

A few days later, the stolen generator was found hidden under bags of pure water and firewood in a truck stopped randomly by police near Ota.

Ogbonna was in the vehicle with the driver and another accomplice. When the police intervened, the driver and his partner fled with the truck, leaving Ogbonna behind.

He was arrested on the spot but escaped from custody the same night by breaking the cell ceiling.

However, the vehicle’s registration number had already been recorded. Investigations led police to the owner, who identified his four drivers. One of them, Sunday Oloyede, was arrested and cooperated with authorities.

He led the police to Kolawole Oladeji and Segun Ajibade, and together, they directed them to Ogbonna once more.

Ogbonna had already sold the stolen generator by this time. He took the police to the buyer, Ali Rihan, who returned the generator and later testified against him in court.

The prosecution presented eleven witnesses, including Yusuf Akanni and Ali Rihan.

Ogbonna made two confessional statements, which were admitted without objection or claims of coercion. Instead of calling any witnesses or presenting evidence in his defence, Ogbonna rested his case entirely on that of the prosecution.

This is a legal strategy that implies agreement with the facts, though disputing that they amount to guilt. The court disagreed and found him guilty.

In 2021, his death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by Governor Dapo Abiodun, who later exercised the prerogative of mercy again in June 2025, resulting in Ogbonna’s release.

This act was not based on innocence but on discretion, guided by factors such as remorse, rehabilitation, and likelihood of reintegration.

Claims that Ogbonna was wrongly convicted for buying a stolen generator are entirely unfounded. The truth, supported by multiple witness testimonies and his own confessions, is that Ogbonna participated in the robbery, helped move the stolen item secretly, and later sold it.

He failed to provide proof of ownership or a lawful transaction. Worse still, he fled detention and continued associating with co-conspirators.

“If he truly bought the generator, why hide it under firewood and flee custody?” asked an official close to the case. “And if he was tortured into confessing, why raise no objection in court?”

Ogbonna’s behaviour today raises concerns about his reform. Unlike Segun Ajibade, who has reportedly lived quietly since release, Ogbonna’s public narrative attempts to rewrite history.

This undermines justice and disrespects the memory of Moses Bankole, who lost his life during the robbery.

The Governor’s prerogative of mercy is not an entitlement. It is a constitutional discretion based on many factors, not a right based on years served. Ogbonna’s claims now insult that process.

Ogbonna prison robbery truth must be clearly stated: this was not a case of mistaken identity or petty theft.

It was armed robbery, and it resulted in a man’s death. Any attempt to whitewash it today only causes further harm to the real victims.
