Nigeria social media compliance crackdown: 13.5M accounts removed and 58.9M offensive contents taken down to enhance online safety

Nigeria social media compliance efforts have intensified as the government shut down approximately 13,597,057 accounts for offensive content and violations of the 2024 Code of Practice by users of TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

The move was highlighted in the Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report, submitted by platforms including Google, Microsoft, and TikTok.

The report, titled “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report Highlights Social Media Platforms’ efforts on Online Harm Protection”, was jointly issued by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Hajiya Hadiza Umar, NITDA’s Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations, revealed that 58,909,112 offensive contents were removed, with 754,629 registered complaints. Additionally, 420,439 pieces of content were removed and later re-uploaded following appeals by users.

“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines,” the statement noted.

The government praised Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for adhering to regulations while emphasizing that sustained collaboration is needed to maintain a safer digital space.

Platforms are required to register in Nigeria, comply with local laws, fulfill tax obligations, and reinforce user safety.

“This achievement reflects the provisions of the Code of Practice, ensuring a secure and trustworthy online environment,” the statement said.

NITDA added that ongoing engagement with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners will further strengthen digital literacy, trust, and transparency in Nigeria’s online ecosystem.

The crackdown marks a major step toward safer social media, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to protecting users while encouraging responsible digital engagement.
