Abdul Jabar Adama wins Nigeria’s first World Junior Swimming medal, setting national records and inspiring future Olympic hopes.

Abdul Jabar Adama historic medal win at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Romania is a groundbreaking moment for Nigerian sports.

At just 17 years old, Adama claimed a silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly, finishing in 23.64 seconds, narrowly behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn.

This achievement not only earned Nigeria’s first-ever medal at this global event but also saw Adama break two Nigerian national records in a single day.

He first lowered his own record to 23.61 seconds in the preliminaries and then pushed it further to 23.48 seconds in the semifinals.

A product of the Mount Kelly Swimming Academy in the UK, Adama’s progress signals a bright future for Nigerian swimming. With the 50m butterfly event set to debut at the Olympics in 2028, he is poised to become a strong contender on the world stage.

The National Sports Commission, through Director General Bukola Olopade, hailed this milestone as a proud moment for Nigeria and Africa, emphasizing the importance of sustained support to nurture such talent.

Olopade said, “This is only the beginning of many more international triumphs for him and Nigerian swimming.”

Adama’s semifinal time was competitive enough to nearly qualify for the senior World Championships semifinals, placing him just shy of the World Aquatics “A” cut.

His rise began when he was discovered at the National Youth Games and awarded a scholarship for training in London.

Earlier this year, he dazzled at the Africa Junior Swimming Championships with three golds, a bronze, and an African Junior record.

As Nigeria celebrates this historic medal, hopes are high that Abdul Jabar Adama will inspire a new generation of swimmers and elevate the country’s status in global aquatic sports.
