Eid-ul-Mawlid Holiday set for September 5, 2025, as FG declares public holiday to honor Prophet Muhammad’s birth, urging peace and unity across Nigeria

The Federal Government has announced Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday to celebrate the Eid-ul-Mawlid Holiday, marking the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The declaration, issued on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, on behalf of Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, brings a moment of unity and reflection for Nigerians.

In a heartfelt statement, the government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and the diaspora, urging them to embody the Prophet’s timeless virtues of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion during the Eid-ul-Mawlid Holiday.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration,” the statement read.

The government also called on Nigerians of all faiths to use this occasion to pray for peace, security, and stability.

It emphasized supporting ongoing efforts to strengthen national unity and drive development, particularly amid Nigeria’s challenges with security and economic issues.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal, is a cherished celebration featuring prayers, lectures, processions, and charitable acts.

In Nigeria, where a significant Muslim population observes this tradition, the Eid-ul-Mawlid Holiday is a national event, reflecting the country’s commitment to honoring major Islamic festivals.

Religious leaders and government officials often leverage this holiday to promote peace and unity.

This year’s celebration comes at a critical time, as Nigeria navigates complex challenges, making the call for compassion and solidarity especially poignant.

As the nation prepares for the Eid-ul-Mawlid Holiday, communities are expected to gather in mosques and public spaces, fostering a spirit of togetherness.
