Many people were feared killed after a helicopter crashed in a swampy area of Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026, with police and military personnel subsequently arriving at the scene as efforts began to establish the circumstances of the crash and the number of casualties.
The helicopter crash occurred in a difficult-to-access area within the creek, according to a local source who said residents heard a loud sound before learning that an aircraft had gone down in the swamp.

The exact number of people aboard the helicopter and the number of casualties remained unclear at the time of filing this report.
The source, who spoke about the incident, said residents were unable to approach the crash site because of the swampy terrain.
“It happened this morning. We heard a very loud sound in the area where the incident occurred, but we could not get there because the place is a swampy area inside the creek; we are just looking at it from afar,” the source said.
The source added that security personnel later arrived in the area to begin rescue operations, although there were fears that some of the occupants may have died.
“But the police and the military people later came around there for rescue, but the occupants of the helicopter might have died there,” the source said.
The development quickly drew attention in Igbokoda and surrounding communities as residents waited for official information about the aircraft, its occupants and the extent of the damage.
The Ondo State Police Command confirmed that an aircraft crash had occurred in the Igbokoda axis but cautioned against drawing conclusions about casualties before the ongoing investigation was completed.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said details of the incident were still emerging.
“The Ondo State Police Command confirms the reported aircraft crash in the Igbokoda axis of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State on Monday, 5th October 2026. Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, as efforts to establish the full circumstances continue,” Jimoh said.
The police spokesperson urged residents of Igbokoda and neighbouring communities to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified reports about the incident.
Jimoh said the public would receive further information once credible details became available.
