Lagos E1 Series makes history as Africa’s first electric boat race. The event highlights sustainability, innovation, and global investment opportunities

Lagos E1 Series is officially making waves as the city prepares to host Africa’s first-ever electric boat racing championship on October 4 and 5, 2025.

The historic event, organised under the prestigious E1 Series, is set to spotlight Lagos on the global stage of innovation, sustainability, and sport.

At a press conference on Monday, Rodi Basso, CEO of the E1 Series, revealed that Lagos beat world-class cities in a competitive bid to host the milestone event.

He described it as “a major milestone for sport, sustainability, and commerce in Africa.”

“The E1 Series showcases technical prowess and proves boats can become more sustainable by leveraging alternative power and unique architecture,” Basso said, emphasizing the evolution of the marine industry.

The Lagos E1 Series will not only spotlight electric mobility on water but also serve as a strategic vehicle to drive economic investment, tourism, and clean energy advocacy across Africa.

Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, called the event a proof of Lagos’ capacity to host large-scale international innovations.

“For Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, this is proof of capacity. We are hosting an event that merges speed, sustainability, and innovation,” Egube stated.

“It signals economic opportunity, tourism growth, and global prestige.”

The Lagos E1 Series aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, particularly in advancing marine transport and sustainable urban mobility.

With the upcoming Omi Eko Project, the city plans to introduce 72 electric boats to enhance water-based transit and reduce road congestion.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, urged local businesses, artisans, and hospitality providers to leverage the global attention and revenue the event is expected to generate.

“This is not just a race. It’s an opportunity for cultural exchange, business development, and showcasing Lagos’ vibrancy to the world,” she added.

The E1 Series is a global race competition focused on electric powerboats.

The Lagos edition marks the first time the series will be held in Africa, a nod to Nigeria’s growing role in climate-forward innovation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who previously attended an E1 event in Monaco, described the experience as an inspiration for bold ideas in sustainable transportation.

His administration views the championship as a catalyst for clean energy adoption, marine innovation, and international collaboration.

“History is happening here,” Egube declared. “Lagos is racing for the future, for Africa, for the world.”
