Bayelsa Queens CAF Champions League bid gets boost as Governor Diri urges corporate bodies to support the team ahead of WAFU B final in Ivory Coast

Bayelsa Queens CAF Champions League campaign has gained renewed attention as Governor Douye Diri appealed to corporate organisations and individuals to support the team’s quest for continental success.

The Governor’s call came ahead of the team’s WAFU B Champions League qualifiers final against Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosas, taking place today in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast.

Diri made the passionate appeal during the 172nd State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Yenagoa, where he reiterated the importance of corporate social responsibility in sports development.

“We should have our Bayelsa Queens in prayers, and whatever substance you have as a Bayelsan in support of what the state government is doing for our team should be done,” he said.

The Governor commended Premium Trust Bank for previously setting a commendable example by donating a Coaster bus to Bayelsa Queens during the Governor’s Prosperity Cup.

He urged other businesses and oil companies in the state to emulate such gestures.

“Businesses and oil companies operating on our land should encourage our girls in whatever way they can to promote sports,” Diri added.

Bayelsa Queens, Nigeria’s only representative in this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League, are aiming to replicate their 2022 feat when they won the WAFU B qualifiers and finished third overall in the main tournament held in Morocco.

The Governor concluded by congratulating the team on their current progress and emphasized the broader role of sports in youth development and national pride.
