Obi of Lagos arrested

Obi of Lagos arrested by police with three accomplices as officers foil planned unveiling ceremony. Lagos Command warns against impersonation

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a self-acclaimed traditional ruler who falsely paraded himself as the “Obi of Lagos.”

The arrest, carried out on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, also saw three accomplices taken into custody as security operatives foiled a planned unveiling ceremony in the state.

Police spokesperson SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident, stating that intelligence reports had alerted officers to preparations for the illegal event.

“Our operatives acted swiftly to prevent a breach of peace and to stop individuals from misleading unsuspecting members of the public,” he said.

According to the Command, the suspect had been promoting himself across social circles as the “Obi of Lagos” and had mobilized supporters for a grand coronation-style unveiling.

The police described the attempt as not only fraudulent but also capable of stirring unnecessary tension within the state’s traditional institution.

Authorities stressed that Lagos already has recognized traditional rulers and warned residents against falling for impostors. Hundeyin added that the suspects are currently in custody and investigations are ongoing.

“The public is advised to disregard such claims and report any similar activities. Lagos has no title called ‘Obi of Lagos,’ and no individual is permitted to confer it upon themselves,” the statement emphasized.

The Lagos Command further assured residents of its commitment to maintaining law and order while safeguarding the integrity of the state’s cultural heritage.
