Oyo State Police school safety alert urges parents to stay vigilant as schools reopen, emphasising protection against abuse and knowing school staff.

The Oyo State Police school safety alert has been issued to parents as schools across the state officially reopen for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The police emphasised the urgent need for parents to remain vigilant by knowing teachers, school staff, and understanding their children’s interests.

In a statement shared on their official X account, the police warned of “growing incidents of abuse, particularly against girls,” urging parents to watch for warning signs from their children to intervene before it is too late.

Parents were also advised to familiarise themselves with school bus drivers and security personnel, with any concerns or reports encouraged to be directed to the Oyo Police Control Room on +234 808 176 8614.

Schools across Nigeria resumed their first term recently, with pupils returning to both renovated classrooms and, in some cases, neglected facilities.

The Oyo State Ministry of Education confirmed there was no postponement, affirming that schools reopened as scheduled.

The police further reminded parents and guardians to prioritise not only academic success but also the overall safety of their children within and outside school grounds.

The official academic calendar for Lagos shows the first half of the term running from September 15 to October 31, followed by the second half from November 10 to December 19.

This alert serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role parents and guardians play in safeguarding children’s welfare in an increasingly complex environment.
