Fubara sacks commissioners and public officers following Supreme Court ruling, marking a fresh start in Rivers State’s leadership.

Fubara sacks commissioners and other public office holders in a sweeping move that signals a new phase of leadership in Rivers State following a recent Supreme Court judgment.

The governor’s decision was announced in a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, on Wednesday evening in Port Harcourt.

The directive takes immediate effect, affecting all commissioners and public officials appointed under his administration.

The announcement came shortly after a valedictory cabinet session held to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary. Governor Siminalayi Fubara expressed his gratitude to the outgoing officials for their contributions to the state’s development over the past two years.

“This marks a turning point,” Fubara said, calling on Nigerians to unite behind President Bola Tinubu for a more prosperous nation. The governor also pledged to serve with “renewed vigour,” reassuring Rivers residents of his continued commitment to their welfare.

The statement confirmed:

“Governor Siminalayi Fubara has relieved all Commissioners and other public officers affected by the recent Supreme Court judgment of their appointments with immediate effect.”

The move comes in the wake of the exit of emergency rule administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), who had earlier suspended all of Fubara’s appointees during his brief tenure.

Since Ibas’s departure on September 18, there had been uncertainty over the status of Fubara’s former cabinet.

The Rivers State House of Assembly, during its first sitting after the emergency rule, urged the governor to submit a new list of commissioner-nominees and the 2025 budget for approval.

Fubara sacks commissioners amid growing calls for stability and clarity in Rivers’ governance. The action, though bold, aligns with expectations that the state government must re-establish its administrative framework post-emergency.
