North-Central APC Forum rejects state police, warning it threatens democracy and minority rights across Nigeria

North-Central APC Forum rejects state police amid growing security debate in Nigeria. The forum, representing key stakeholders in the region, has issued a strong statement urging President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to dismiss calls for the creation of state police.

Chairman Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga highlighted that introducing state police would lead to increased oppression and abuse of power, particularly against minority groups and opposition voices.

He emphasised that existing federal police structures are already misused by some governors to intimidate dissent, and giving them further control would exacerbate the problem.

The North-Central APC Forum views state police as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and social cohesion.

The forum warned that such a move could deepen religious and ethnic tensions in the diverse region, with security forces potentially enforcing religious dominance and marginalising minorities.

This firm rejection follows Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s renewed appeal for state police as a solution to rising insecurity.

However, the forum labelled this proposal “dangerous and counterproductive,” urging lawmakers and civil society to prioritise national unity and democratic principles.

The North-Central APC Forum’s stance is a critical voice in the ongoing debate about Nigeria’s security architecture, emphasising that safeguarding democracy and minority rights must remain paramount.
