Governor Sanwo-Olu launches the Omi Eko Project to transform Lagos waterways into sustainable transport and economic corridors

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Lagos waterways from natural landmarks into thriving corridors of economic activity and sustainable transport.

Speaking on Wednesday at the official launch of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Omi Eko Project, Sanwo-Olu described the initiative as a historic step in reshaping the state’s transport and environmental future.

“For centuries, water has defined the rhythm of Lagos. From the bustling trade canoes of our ancestors to the ferries that glide across our lagoon today, our story has always been written on water.

But history is not just what we inherit; it is also what we choose to create,” the governor said.

He described the Omi Eko Project as a bold statement of intent and a key part of Lagos’ vision to lead Africa in developing a sustainable, technologically advanced, and environmentally responsible water transport system.

“This is not just a project unveiling. It is a comprehensive, future-oriented blueprint that merges technology, environmental stewardship, and smart design to create waterways that are not just navigated but optimised,” Sanwo-Olu added.

According to the governor, the initiative is expected to ease traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions, and unlock new economic opportunities in waterfront communities across the state.

In his goodwill message, former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, praised Sanwo-Olu’s leadership and urged the government to ensure strong intermodal connectivity by linking the waterways with the rail and road transport systems.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, highlighted that the Omi Eko Project would significantly reduce travel times and provide Lagosians with a reliable, affordable, and eco-friendly alternative to road travel.

Earlier, Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Damilola Emmanuel, said the initiative would also advance the state’s climate resilience goals, improve safety on waterways, and promote inclusive economic growth across coastal areas.
