In a statement released by the state’s Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, the Imo State Police Command confirmed that it has initiated a joint show-of-force operation involving the police, military, DSS, NSCDC, FRSC, and other security agencies.

This move is aimed at reassuring residents, deterring mischief-makers, and maintaining the fragile calm in the region.

The statement noted that while the command recognises the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, it would not tolerate any activity that threatens the peace or security of the state.

“Any act capable of disrupting public order or endangering safety will be met with firm and lawful resistance,” Okoye stated firmly.

The operation comes amid reports that certain groups plan to stage protests in demand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who remains in detention on charges of treasonable felony.

Many residents in Owerri and other parts of Imo chose to remain indoors, wary of a potential escalation. Streets that typically buzz with activity were largely empty on Monday.

Shops, schools, and offices stayed shut, adding to the city’s subdued atmosphere.

Local accounts described the city as unusually quiet, with only a few residents seen braving the streets.

Security personnel were stationed at key junctions and public spaces across the state, visibly alert and maintaining order.

Authorities have warned criminal elements and political agitators against exploiting the tense climate for unlawful purposes.

As anxiety lingers, the Imo State Police reiterated its commitment to public safety, rule of law, and upholding the rights of citizens, while calling on residents to cooperate with security operatives and go about their activities peacefully.
