Obama paid homage to Fela in a new podcast series titled “Fela Kuti: Fear No Man,” released on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, by Higher Ground — the media company he co-founded with his wife, Michelle Obama.

In a short video shared on his Instagram page, Obama described Fela as “a musical genius from Nigeria” whose creativity and courage transcended boundaries.

“He is a musical genius from Nigeria. A unique figure in musical history who made music that I really love,” Obama said.

The former US President revealed that his admiration for Fela is deeply personal, calling the musician a rare artist who successfully fused rhythm, politics and social justice into a powerful global message.

The Fela Kuti: Fear No Man series, produced by Higher Ground, is part of a broader initiative by the Obamas to highlight artists who used their platforms to challenge oppression and inspire change through creativity.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who died in 1997, remains one of Nigeria’s most influential cultural icons.

Through his Afrobeat sound and outspoken resistance to military dictatorship and corruption, he became a symbol of defiance and freedom across Africa and beyond.

The Barack Obama honours Fela Kuti moment has reignited conversations about the late musician’s enduring influence, with fans and cultural commentators praising Obama for spotlighting Fela’s revolutionary legacy on a global stage.

More than two decades after his passing, Fela’s music continues to inspire new generations, embodying the same fearless spirit that earned him the title “Abami Eda”  the strange one.
