Oworonshoki demolition compensation resumes as Lagos renews enumeration for residents yet to receive payment after recent demolitions

Lagos, 4 November 2025 — The Oworonshoki demolition compensation process has entered a new phase as the Lagos State Government commenced another round of enumeration for affected residents yet to be captured in the initial assessment.

The exercise, conducted on Monday by the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), took place at the Oloworo Palace in Oworonshoki, within Kosofe Local Government Area.

According to officials, the latest enumeration targets property owners impacted by the October 26 demolition in the Coker and Ojulari areas — which occurred just hours after the government announced that 79 property owners had received compensation in the first batch.

LASURA spokesperson Adedeji Akolade confirmed that the exercise aims to identify additional property owners for inclusion in the next phase of payments.

“What we did today was to carry out the enumeration for the second batch,” Akolade told The PUNCH.

“We are counting the number of property owners affected and the extent of the damage. Over 100 people were listed today, and the process continues tomorrow.”

Akolade added that the updated data would help the agency verify ownership and determine the scope of losses to ensure equitable compensation.

The General Manager of LASURA, Oladimeji Animashaun, led the exercise alongside the agency’s directors, traditional rulers, and community leaders.

He praised residents for their cooperation and commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for honouring his compensation pledge.

“Governor Sanwo-Olu must be commended for fulfilling his promise to compensate residents affected by the regeneration exercise,” Animashaun said.

He also acknowledged the efforts of the Special Adviser on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde, and the Permanent Secretary, Office of Urban Development, Gbolahan Oki, for their dedication to ensuring fairness in the process.

Residents were urged to complete and submit their enumeration forms with supporting documents for verification.

Once the vetting process is complete, LASURA confirmed that another round of cheque presentations will follow.

This renewed Oworonshoki demolition compensation exercise highlights the government’s continuing effort to balance urban regeneration with social responsibility, amid ongoing concerns from residents about displacement and property loss.
