Katsina United fans attack Barau FC player during NPFL match

An injured football player from Babarau Football Club lying on the field after a collision, showing facial injuries and blood, during an intense match against grass and spectators.

Chaos erupted as Katsina United fans attacked a Barau FC player during an NPFL match, leaving him injured and sparking outrage over stadium violence

Tension erupted on Saturday during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter between Katsina United and Barau Football Club, after a Barau player, Nana Abraham, was brutally attacked by enraged fans of the home team.

The violence broke out moments after Barau’s Orji Kalu scored a 69th-minute equaliser to level the game 1-1, a development that appeared to infuriate some Katsina United supporters at the stadium.

According to a post on Barau FC’s official X handle, the match was suspended shortly after the incident:

“70’ The match is temporarily halted following an attack on Barau FC player, Nana Abraham. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

Just a minute earlier, the club had celebrated the equaliser with another post that read:

“69’ Goal Orji Kalu level the scores. Katsina United | 1-1 | Barau FC.”

A disturbing image obtained by SaharaReporters shows Nana Abraham bleeding from a deep neck wound, as teammates and officials rushed to his aid while security personnel tried to restore order.

The match, played in Katsina, was briefly halted as security operatives battled to calm the chaos.

As of press time, neither the NPFL management nor Katsina United had issued an official statement regarding the assault.

The attack has once again raised serious concerns about fan violence and poor security management in Nigerian football, prompting renewed calls for stricter sanctions and improved stadium safety protocols.

This latest incident comes barely a month after SaharaReporters reported a similar case of crowd violence in Kano, where Kano Pillars supporters stormed the pitch following a last-minute equaliser by Shooting Stars (3SC) of Ibadan at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

That attack resulted in a ₦9.5 million fine, three-point and three-goal deduction, and the indefinite closure of the Sani Abacha Stadium after the NPFL found the club guilty of multiple breaches of league rules.

Observers say the NPFL’s response to the Katsina incident will be a key test of its commitment to curbing recurring violence in Nigerian football arenas.
