FIFA’s AFCON Release Date Change keeps African internationals with clubs until 15 December, easing pressure on European teams.

FIFA on Wednesday confirmed an AFCON Release Date Change that will allow African internationals, including Nigeria’s leading players, to remain with their clubs until 15 December, offering vital relief to sides across Europe preparing for the festive fixture surge.

FIFA said the adjustment followed what it described as fruitful consultations with the Confederation of African Football, adding that CAF demonstrated a spirit of solidarity in agreeing to shift the mandatory release window by one week.

The global governing body urged national federations and clubs to maintain good faith bilateral discussions to minimise friction over player availability.

The decision means prominent Nigeria internationals Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey will be available deeper into the December schedule before travelling to Morocco for the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins on 21 December and ends on 18 January.

Several European clubs had warned that the earlier 8 December release date would leave them without key players for up to eight matches during one of the season’s most demanding stretches.

The updated ruling provides what many managers regard as a powerful measure of stability during a period already strained by injuries and fixture congestion.

Liverpool will still lose Mohamed Salah, while Manchester City must release Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Manchester United will be without Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui. Arsenal, Chelsea and Leeds will remain unaffected by this edition of the tournament.

Fulham are set to release Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and in-form winger Samuel Chukwueze, while Brentford will lose Frank Onyeka.

Wolverhampton Wanderers face the absence of Tolu Arokodare, and Atalanta must do without Ademola Lookman, whose recent form has been decisive in their Serie A campaign.

Further departures include Victor Osimhen from Galatasaray, Sevilla duo Chidera Ejuke and Akor Adams, and Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika.

All are expected to play central roles in Nigeria’s AFCON preparations.

The updated release date gives players an additional week to complete crucial club duties before joining national camps.

Heavyweights such as Nigeria, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria and Senegal are expected to contend strongly for the title in a 24-nation tournament regarded as one of the world’s most competitive international events.
