Lagos lawyer alleges medical negligence after his wife died from postpartum haemorrhage at a Lekki hospital, demanding investigation and justice.
A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Justice John, has accused Gynescope Specialist Hospital, Lekki, of medical negligence following the death of his wife, Mrs Akudo Lovelyn John, during childbirth.
Mrs John reportedly died on 4 December 2025 after what her husband described as gross mismanagement of Primary Postpartum Haemorrhage (PPH) at the private facility.
John said his wife had registered and received antenatal care at the hospital without any underlying health condition. During her third trimester, doctors reportedly noted the baby’s large size but dismissed concerns about an elective Caesarean section.
According to John, his wife went into labour on Wednesday, 3 December 2025. She delivered a baby weighing 4.2 kilograms through spontaneous vaginal delivery after an episiotomy performed by the consultant, Dr Joseph Aliyu Yahaya.
He alleged that shortly after delivery, his wife complained of internal discomfort and excessive bleeding. Although the consultant confirmed internal bleeding, John claimed no urgent referral or specialist intervention was initiated.
John further alleged that his wife remained unconscious and continued bleeding for several hours. Blood transfusion was reportedly administered without first identifying or repairing the source of bleeding.
At about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, 4 December 2025, Mrs John reportedly began convulsing. John said no medical personnel were present at the time and there was no oxygen supply in the ward.
He claimed the hospital delayed her transfer to another facility and only agreed after her condition deteriorated further.
During evacuation, John alleged that hospital staff used an unsecured stretcher, causing his wife to fall onto a tiled floor. He also accused the hospital of poor emergency preparedness, stating that the ambulance was parked far from the entrance, lacked immediate access keys, and was not ready for use.
The ambulance reportedly experienced navigation issues en route to Lagos Island, before arriving at Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, where Mrs John was pronounced dead on arrival.
Gynescope Specialist Hospital reportedly issued a death certificate citing cardiac arrest as the cause of death. However, an autopsy conducted at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) allegedly confirmed haemorrhagic shock as the cause.
John said he has petitioned the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Health Service Commission, and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, demanding a full investigation and accountability.
“I demand justice for my wife,” he stated.
