Osun PDP backs Adeleke’s second-term bid despite defection

Osun PDP declares full support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s second-term bid, even after his defection to Accord Party ahead of 2026 governorship election

The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared full support for Governor Ademola Adeleke’s second-term bid, despite his recent defection to the Accord Party.

Adeleke, who left the PDP to join Accord Party, secured the party’s ticket for the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

Speaking to journalists in Osogbo, PDP State Chairman Sunday Bisi said he would not be following Adeleke to his new party, but affirmed that the entire PDP structure in Osun backs the governor.

“I have not decamped to any political party. I remain the PDP Chairman in Osun State, and my tenure subsists till 2027. However, the entire structure of the PDP in Osun is behind Governor Ademola Adeleke. We have already endorsed him for a second term, and we will ensure that happens. He will win convincingly,” Bisi said.

Asked about the PDP governorship candidate, Adebayo Adedamola (FRYO), Bisi claimed ignorance of his candidacy, insisting that the party’s focus is on ensuring Adeleke’s victory under the Accord Party platform.

On concerns about accusations of anti-party activity, Bisi dismissed the notion, citing historical precedents where political endorsements across party lines were accepted.

“There is nothing like anti-party in us supporting Adeleke for second term. It is not new. When the party endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s APC for a second term, there was nothing like anti-party. So, we are not doing anything new,” he said.

Meanwhile, former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola clarified his position on Adeleke’s defection, stating that he remains firmly in the PDP.

Speaking at the second matriculation ceremony of Alolade Oyinlola College of Health Sciences and Information Technology in Okuku, Oyinlola said neither age nor principle would make him leave the party.

“I won’t leave PDP unless the party goes into extinction. I am not following Demola to Accord. At my age, I cannot be pushed around. I’m gradually withdrawing from active politics. I will be 75 in February,” he said.
