DR Congo FIFA eligibility under scrutiny after allegations of players breaching nationality rules in African playoff against Nigeria
Nigeria’s hopes of a return to the FIFA World Cup remain alive as the eligibility of several Democratic Republic of Congo players during the African playoffs for the 2026 tournament comes under investigation by FIFA.

The Super Eagles were eliminated by DR Congo on penalties in the decisive playoff for Africa’s intercontinental qualifying spot.
Allegations have emerged that up to nine DR Congo players may have switched nationalities without completing the legal and administrative requirements mandated by Congolese law and FIFA regulations.
DR Congo does not generally recognise dual citizenship, meaning players who acquire another nationality must formally renounce their original citizenship a critical step for those exceeding the age limit for making a definitive nationality choice.
FIFA rules also require that possession of a passport alone does not guarantee eligibility; domestic legal compliance and adherence to FIFA statutes are essential.
Reports indicate that some DR Congo players may not have fully satisfied these conditions, including at least one player who had previously declined an international call-up.
FIFA is examining the documentation and circumstances to determine whether violations occurred.
Potential sanctions could range from match forfeiture to broader disciplinary measures, though outright expulsion would be considered extreme.

The investigation has left DR Congo’s qualification status uncertain, while Nigeria remains on standby pending FIFA’s final decision.
