Toyin Lawani warns that broken healthcare regulation in Nigeria endangers patients after alleging negligence following spine surgery in a Lagos hospital

Fashion designer and entrepreneur Toyin Lawani has called for urgent regulation of Nigeria’s healthcare system after alleging medical negligence following a spinal surgery at a Lagos-based hospital.

Toyin Lawani said in a series of posts on Instagram that she suffered serious complications after the procedure, accusing the hospital of prioritising profit over patient welfare.

The designer said the experience left her questioning the standards and oversight governing private medical facilities in the country.

“Nigeria’s healthcare system needs regulation,” Toyin Lawani wrote.

“Anybody from abroad can have money and open a hospital in Nigeria as a business and do as they wish.”

The fashion entrepreneur said many hospitals rely on visiting doctors who are not permanent staff, raising concerns about continuity of care and accountability when complications arise.

She advised Nigerians who can afford it to seek medical treatment outside the country, warning that local healthcare standards remain unreliable.

“If you have health issues in Nigeria, if you have your money, run,” Toyin Lawani said.

Her comments followed similar allegations by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who recently accused the Euracare Hospital in Lagos of negligence in the death of her son.

Toyin Lawani said that hearing about that case prompted her to speak publicly about her own experience.

“Seeing Chimamanda Adichie’s story today triggered me to speak up so that so many people can be saved,” she said.

The allegations have renewed public debate about regulatory oversight, patient safety and accountability within Nigeria’s private healthcare sector.
