AFCON Morocco 2025 achieved unprecedented digital engagement, recording 6.1bn impressions and 5.2bn video views, CAF confirms

The Confederation of African Football, CAF, announced in Cairo on Wednesday that the CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 achieved unprecedented global digital engagement during the tournament.

CAF said the competition generated a record 6.1 billion digital impressions and 5.2 billion video views across social media platforms, marking a sharp rise from previous editions.

According to CAF, AFCON Morocco 2025 digital engagement almost tripled the figures recorded at AFCON 2023, which generated about 2.1 billion digital views.

CAF described the performance as a defining moment for African football, positioning the tournament as a dominant force in the global digital space.

“The TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 is now the most viewed continental football competition,” the football body said.

CAF attributed much of the growth to increased participation from the African diaspora, with millions of new users engaging with tournament content throughout the event.

The body said match highlights, dramatic moments, behind-the-scenes footage and fan reactions travelled rapidly across borders, languages and cultures.

CAF added that fans drove the tournament’s online success, recording 285 million engagements during the competition.

TikTok emerged as a central platform, with more than one million fan-generated videos created under the hashtag #TotalEnergiesAFCON2025, CAF said.

The content ranged from goal celebrations and tactical analysis to humour, music and fashion inspired by the tournament, helping to attract younger audiences worldwide.

AFCON Morocco 2025 was hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Senegal won the tournament after defeating Morocco 1–0 in the final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Nigeria finished third.

The competition featured newly upgraded stadiums and musical performances by international artistes, including Davido, which added to its cultural appeal.

However, the tournament was also marked by controversy, including disputed refereeing decisions, reported VAR malfunctions and on- and off-pitch altercations.

CAF confirmed that Algeria, Senegal and Morocco, alongside several players, were sanctioned for various acts of misconduct before the tournament ended.
