2026 WAFCON host confirmed as Morocco, with South Africa ready to assist CAF if alternative arrangements become necessary
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, has dismissed reports that the country will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, reaffirming that Morocco remains the official host of the tournament, scheduled to begin on March 17.

McKenzie issued the clarification following remarks by Deputy Minister of Sport, Peace Mabel, suggesting South Africa had taken over hosting duties after Morocco allegedly withdrew.
The minister stated that South Africa has only expressed readiness to assist the Confederation of African Football if alternative hosting arrangements become necessary.
“At this stage, no formal decision has been taken to relocate the tournament, and Morocco remains the official designated host of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.CAF has not activated any alternative hosting process,” McKenzie said in a statement.
The minister explained that South Africa’s potential support would require formal approval from CAF, clearance from the national cabinet, and confirmation that venues and infrastructure are ready.
These measures, he added, are part of CAF’s routine contingency planning ahead of major tournaments.
Morocco is set to host the WAFCON for the third consecutive time, having finished as runners-up in the previous two editions, losing to South Africa in 2022 and to Nigeria’s Super Falcons in 2024.

The tournament will run from March 17 to April 3.
