UK eVisa visitors rule begins Feb 25, 2026 as UKVI ends physical visas. Travellers must access status through a UKVI account before travel

The UK Visas and Immigration announced on Friday that visitors to the United Kingdom who require visas will no longer receive physical documents from February 25, 2026, as the government completes its transition to a fully digital system.

In a statement, UK Visas and Immigration said travellers will instead be issued an electronic visa and must view the document through a UKVI account before travelling.

“From 25 February 2026 visitors to the UK, who need a visa, will get an eVisa only. Create your UKVI account and view your eVisa, before you travel to the UK,” the agency said.

The government described an eVisa as a digital record of a person’s identity and immigration status, including the type of visa held and the conditions attached, such as permission to work or study.

UK Visas and Immigration said the eVisa system is replacing physical immigration documents. Biometric residence permits have already been phased out and will be followed by biometric residence cards and passport vignettes.

Travellers will typically receive an eVisa once an application for a visa or other permission to enter the country is approved.

Once issued, users can view the eVisa online and generate a share code to prove immigration status when required, such as for employment or tenancy checks. Travellers must also link passport or travel document details to the account before departure.

The agency added that creating a UKVI account and accessing the eVisa does not attract any fee.
