The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has dismantled illegal drug distribution enclaves in Itu Local Government Area, arresting 18 suspects, the command said on Monday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed that operatives conducted the raid on Sunday, targeting syndicate hideouts in Oku Iboko and Mbak communities.

“These locations are active drug distribution hubs; they are also fueling criminal activities in the area,” John said.

A significant quantity of suspected illicit substances was recovered during the operation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the hideouts were being used as distribution points for narcotics, which are contributing to youth delinquency, violent crimes, and other social vices.

John said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend additional collaborators.

The police spokesperson urged individuals involved in drug trafficking to desist from unlawful activities or face the full force of the law.

She reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling criminality in Akwa Ibom, stating: “We shall continue to intensify intelligence-driven raids across the state to dismantle criminal hideouts.”

Community leaders and residents were encouraged to provide credible intelligence to the police.

“Those who choose to undermine the peace and safety of Akwa Ibom should be prepared for swift and decisive action,” John added.
