Atiku Abubakar APC regret as former VP laments worsening insecurity and economy since ruling party’s formation in 2014

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on 27 February 2026 expressed regret over his role in the creation of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2014, saying Nigeria’s challenges have worsened under the current administration.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Atiku recalled that opposition leaders united in 2014 to form the APC in response to perceived democratic faltering under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We did this exercise in 2014, not so? We came together and formed APC because we felt democracy was faltering, only for us to end up at the same position we found ourselves in 2014 worse,” Atiku said.

The former vice president highlighted that insecurity and economic instability were key motivators for forming the APC.

He argued that the present situation exceeds the challenges of 2014, stressing the urgent need to restore what he described as “true democracy” in Nigeria.

The press briefing, themed “Urgent Call to Save Nigeria’s Democracy,” drew prominent opposition figures who underscored the importance of a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku urged political actors to learn from past experiences to prevent further erosion of democratic values and institutional integrity.
