Apple features Fela Kuti’s 1971 hit in MacBook Air M5 promo

Apple’s MacBook Air M5 promo features Fela Kuti’s 1971 classic “Let’s Start,” sparking viral reactions and renewed discussion about the Afrobeat legend

Apple Inc. has brought Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti back into the spotlight by featuring his 1971 classic song “Let’s Start” in a promotional video for the new MacBook Air M5.

The ad, which surfaced on social media on Tuesday, highlights the laptop’s artistic capabilities, including nine times faster AI performance and an 18-hour battery life.

The fusion of cutting-edge technology with Fela’s iconic music drew immediate attention online.

Fans and commentators responded to the video with enthusiasm, praising the choice of soundtrack while also reigniting debates about modern Nigerian music rivalries.

Some social media users referenced recent controversies involving singer Wizkid and alleged disrespect toward Fela Kuti’s legacy.

Zaonboi wrote: “Na this man Grand children and great-grand children dey enjoy all this money…. MECHANICAL ROYALTIES yapa!!!” while iamjustified__ added: “You see that intro nah evergreen aje.” Other reactions highlighted Fela’s enduring influence on global Afrobeat recognition.

Fela Kuti’s international acclaim has been longstanding. In January 2026, the Recording Academy posthumously awarded him the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at the Special Merit Awards in Los Angeles, a day before the main ceremony.

Veteran Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti, Fela’s son, has previously cautioned against comparisons between his father and contemporary Nigerian artists.

Speaking to Arise Television, he said such debates distract from pressing social and political issues in Nigeria.
