FG disinformation threat highlighted as government urges media cooperation to tackle misinformation and protect public trust in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday called for stronger collaboration between the media, public institutions and stakeholders to confront what he described as a growing disinformation threat to public trust and national cohesion.

The FG disinformation threat warning was delivered during the 2026 World Press Freedom Day event held at Radio House in Abuja, where Mohammed Idris emphasised the urgent need for coordinated action to curb the spread of false information.

“This administration has prioritised collaboration with media stakeholders and international partners to promote responsible journalism, counter disinformation and misinformation,” Mohammed Idris said, according to a statement issued by media aide Rabiu Ibrahim.

Mohammed Idris reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to press freedom, describing it as a constitutionally guaranteed right that must be exercised responsibly.

Mohammed Idris added that the government remains dedicated to creating a safe and enabling environment for journalists to operate in line with democratic principles and the rule of law.

Highlighting ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu, Mohammed Idris said efforts to enhance transparency include stronger enforcement of the Freedom of Information Act and expanded engagement with the media.

The minister also pointed to Nigeria’s collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation to establish the International Media and Information Literacy Institute in Abuja, describing the initiative as a powerful step towards promoting critical thinking and responsible information use in the digital age.

Mohammed Idris further urged journalists to uphold ethical standards, professionalism and fairness, stressing that press freedom must be balanced with accountability.

Mohammed Idris noted that the credibility of the media depends not only on its independence but also on the accuracy and responsibility of its reporting.

In her remarks, Permanent Secretary Binyerem Ukaire said the event provided an important platform to deepen cooperation across the media and information space.

Binyerem Ukaire observed that the rapid expansion of digital platforms has intensified the spread of misinformation, making institutional coordination more urgent.

“The expansion of digital platforms has introduced new complexities that require coordinated institutional responses, especially in addressing misinformation and strengthening public trust,” Binyerem Ukaire said.

The gathering also drew participation from senior security and media officials, including representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Press Council, reflecting a broad-based commitment to tackling the FG disinformation threat.

The Federal Government reiterated its resolve to work with local and international partners, civil society and the media to strengthen an information ecosystem that supports democracy, unity and sustainable development.
