Kano censorship board announces Kannywood actors suspension over alleged indecent content in controversial video

The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended two Kannywood actors over their appearance in a controversial video alleged to contain content considered contrary to public morality and decency in the state.

The board announced the decision in a statement issued on Sunday, saying the move formed part of efforts to enforce discipline, preserve cultural values, and ensure compliance with regulations guiding film production in Kano State.

The statement, signed by Abdullahi Sulaiman on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, identified the affected actors as Amina Uba Hassan and Adam Garba.

According to the board, the Kannywood actors suspension followed widespread reactions to a video that reportedly generated outrage among some residents over alleged indecent content.

“The two actors were suspended after appearing in a video that generated controversy among residents of Kano State over alleged indecent content,” the statement said.

The board explained that the suspension would prevent the actors from participating in any film related activities within Kano State for one year.

“The suspension bars the actors from participating in any film related activities in Kano State for one year,” the statement added.

The agency further noted that the law establishing the board grants it the authority to sanction practitioners found violating regulations governing the Kannywood industry.

“The law establishing the board empowers it to suspend any Kannywood practitioner found violating its regulations, while defiance of the directive could attract stricter sanctions,” the statement noted.

Reacting to the development, El-Mustapha urged actors and filmmakers in the Kannywood industry to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid actions capable of damaging the reputation of the sector.

“Kannywood practitioners should avoid actions capable of tarnishing their image or bringing disrepute to the industry,” he said.

He also warned producers and directors against disregarding the directive, stressing that any violation of the suspension order would amount to a breach of the board’s regulations.

“Disregarding the suspension order will amount to a direct violation of the board’s regulations,” El-Mustapha added.

The latest disciplinary action highlights the Kano Censorship Board’s continued efforts to regulate film content and maintain cultural and moral standards within the Kannywood industry.
