Tinubu, the governors and the looming power struggle within APC

Presidency dismisses false Tinubu constitutional amendment claims, describing the viral report as fake and divisive

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has dismissed as false and divisive a viral report claiming that the Federal Government plans to amend the Nigerian Constitution to rename the country the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the North ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Presidency said the report was entirely fabricated and warned Nigerians against spreading or believing what it described as a dangerous misinformation campaign designed to create political tension across the country.

The Presidency stated that President Tinubu had no plan to forward any proposed legislation code-named “Project True Federation” to the National Assembly, contrary to claims circulating online.

According to the statement, the viral story relied on anonymous sources and formed part of a calculated attempt by “desperate politicians” to stir disaffection, destabilise the polity and heighten political anxiety before the elections scheduled for January 2026.

“The story is part of the dubious plot by some desperate politicians to create disaffection in our country, stir up a political crisis, and heat the polity ahead of the general elections,” the statement read.

The Presidency urged Nigerians to disregard the claims in their entirety, describing those behind the report as “agents of destabilisation and merchants of disorder.”

It also stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a rigorous legal process involving legislative scrutiny, debate and broad national consensus, rather than unilateral executive action.

Under the Nigerian Constitution, amendments require the approval of a two-thirds majority in both chambers of the National Assembly as well as concurrence by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.

The statement noted that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering governance priorities under his administration rather than pursuing divisive constitutional proposals.

The Presidency further warned that fake and inflammatory political content was likely to increase as political campaigns gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.

It called on citizens to remain vigilant, verify information from credible sources and avoid spreading divisive reports capable of undermining national stability.
