PDP slams Keyamo, defends Jonathan’s potential return

PDP slams Keyamo as the opposition defends calls for Jonathan’s return and urges the APC government to focus on Nigeria’s challenges

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has criticised the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, over his comments regarding the party’s affirmation of former President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the PDP accused Keyamo of attempting to interfere in the internal affairs of the party and described recent reactions from the ruling All Progressives Congress as evidence of growing concern over public support for Jonathan’s possible return to national leadership.

The party said it would ordinarily have ignored the minister’s remarks but felt compelled to respond because of what it described as the APC’s “desperation and anxiety” over increasing calls for Jonathan to contest the next presidential election.

The PDP argued that Keyamo built his public reputation by challenging governments and public office holders, making it ironic that he now appeared uncomfortable with political parties and citizens exercising their democratic rights.

According to the statement, the minister should focus on addressing challenges facing the aviation sector and the wider administration rather than commenting on opposition affairs.

The party said Nigerians were more concerned about economic hardship, insecurity, declining purchasing power and other pressing national issues than political criticism directed at Jonathan.

The statement also criticised the performance of the APC-led administration, alleging that the country had experienced worsening economic conditions, infrastructure challenges, unemployment and governance concerns under the ruling party.

Defending Jonathan’s record in office, the PDP maintained that many Nigerians still associate his administration with political stability, economic growth and improved investor confidence.

The party argued that the growing calls for Jonathan’s return reflected public sentiment among citizens seeking stability, national healing and a reduction in political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a pointed response, the PDP said no amount of intimidation or political pressure would prevent Nigerians from expressing their support for leaders they believe can reposition the country.

The opposition party further stated that democracy guarantees citizens the freedom to support candidates of their choice without interference from those currently occupying public office.

The statement concluded by urging Keyamo to direct his attention towards advising the government on solutions to Nigeria’s economic and security challenges rather than commenting on opposition politics.

The exchange marks the latest escalation in political rhetoric ahead of the 2027 general election, as parties continue to position themselves for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
