President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration in Nigeria.

The announcement was made by the Federal Government through the Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated on Tuesday to coordinate nationwide events commemorating the annual occasion.

According to the committee, the Democracy Day programme will feature a series of activities including a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an inter-denominational church service on June 7, and a public lecture on June 9.

Other events lined up include youth and women-focused engagements on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a Democracy Day gala night to round off the celebration.

Inaugurating the committee, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists who played key roles in Nigeria’s return to democratic governance.

Akume said the annual Democracy Day celebration remains a moment for national reflection on the sacrifices made by Nigerians who fought for the entrenchment of democratic rule.

He stated that the administration would use the occasion to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions, governance reforms and national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

He also described the 2026 celebration as “modest but purposeful,” stressing the need for fiscal discipline in government spending.

The SGF further directed members of the organising committee to immediately commence preparations, noting that sub-committees had been created to manage different aspects of the programme.

Nigeria observes Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the historic 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by MKO Abiola, and to celebrate the country’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
