Senate Kyari Arrest Warrant controversy deepens as the Senate distances itself from a committee’s action against former NNPC chief Mele Kyari

The Senate on Thursday distanced itself from an arrest warrant reportedly issued against former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, by its Committee on Public Accounts.

Senate also rejected comments attributed to Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who reportedly described the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as a group of criminals and thieves during a committee hearing on Wednesday.

Kyari arrest warrant senate controversy emerged after reports circulated that the Public Accounts Committee had issued a warrant against Kyari as part of its ongoing oversight activities.

However, the upper legislative chamber moved swiftly to clarify its position, indicating that the reported action did not represent the official stance of the institution.

The development follows growing scrutiny of the operations and management of the national oil company, with lawmakers continuing to examine issues relating to accountability and public finance.

A secondary highlight of the dispute came from remarks allegedly made by Oshiomhole during the hearing, comments that drew a sharp response from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.

In its reaction, the company firmly rejected the characterisation and insisted that it was not a thief.

Senate faces Kyari arrest warrant backlash issue has added another layer to the ongoing public debate surrounding the relationship between lawmakers and the state-owned energy giant.

Observers say the powerful exchange underscores the heightened attention being paid to transparency and governance within key public institutions.

Neither Kyari nor Oshiomhole had publicly responded further to the latest developments at the time of filing this report.
