LASEMA zero fatalities emergency response as Lagos agency handles 18 major incidents without deaths, highlighting improved coordination and safety systems
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported that it successfully managed 18 major emergency incidents across Lagos State between June 14 and June 21, 2026, without recording any fatalities, in what officials described as a significant demonstration of strengthened emergency coordination.

The LASEMA Zero Fatalities Emergency Response covered a wide range of crises, including road traffic crashes, fire outbreaks, tanker-related accidents, container truck incidents, and infrastructure failures across key locations such as Obanikoro, Maryland, Okota, Mushin, Marina, Otedola, Ikeja Underbridge, and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
According to LASEMA spokesperson Afolabi Olawale, emergency teams were swiftly deployed to all affected areas, ensuring rapid containment and rescue operations. Olawale confirmed that out of the 18 recorded incidents, 17 recorded no loss of life, while one victim trapped in a 40-foot container accident at Maryland Roundabout was rescued alive.
“The victim was extricated alive, stabilised by LRU paramedics and transferred to Gbagada Orthopaedic Hospital for advanced care,” Olawale said.
The agency explained that specialised units, including Cobra, Eagle, Sharks and the Lagos Response Team, worked in coordination with the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, the National Emergency Management Agency, and community volunteers to manage the emergencies.
A fire outbreak at COPACI Nigeria Limited in Okota on June 15 was successfully contained before it could spread to nearby warehouses, while another fire incident involving a Mercedes-Benz vehicle at the Polaris Bank premises in Marina was extinguished through joint agency intervention.
The agency also deployed heavy-duty recovery equipment and cranes to clear accident scenes and restore traffic flow on major corridors, including Challenge-Mushin, Obanikoro-Maryland, Otedola Bridge, and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, described the outcome as evidence of sustained investment in emergency preparedness under the state government.
“The consistency of zero-fatality outcomes across high-risk incidents in one week is not accidental. It is the product of deliberate investment in standards, training and equipment under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda,” he said.
He added that adherence to international operational standards played a crucial role in ensuring efficient response times and effective rescue operations across the state.
The agency also urged residents to promptly report emergencies through its toll-free lines and called for greater compliance with road safety and vehicle maintenance regulations to reduce preventable incidents.
In a related development, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority had earlier disclosed that its Rescue and Emergency Response Unit rescued 353 victims of road crashes and related emergencies between January and May 2026, underscoring the sustained pressure on emergency responders in Africa’s most populous city.

Analysts note that while Lagos continues to grapple with infrastructure strain and high traffic density, coordinated emergency management efforts such as the LASEMA Zero Fatalities Emergency Response remain critical in reducing mortality and improving public safety outcomes.
