Man desperately uses foul substance on LASTMA officials in Lagos

A man in Lagos resorted to a shocking LASTMA biological weapon tactic by allegedly using a foul substance on officials to avoid arrest, sparking widespread amusement and debate online

A motorist in Lagos on a bustling afternoon in late 2023 resorted to an extraordinary and unpleasant measure when he allegedly deployed a foul-smelling substance described by witnesses as a homemade biological weapon against officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority attempting to arrest him for a traffic violation.

The dramatic confrontation, which unfolded along a major Lagos thoroughfare and was captured on video, quickly went viral on social media platforms, drawing a mix of shock, humour and criticism from residents familiar with the daily tussles between traffic enforcers and motorists in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

LASTMA officials had approached the driver over an alleged infraction when, according to accounts shared widely online, he produced a container and sprayed or threw its contents at them in a desperate bid to escape apprehension.

The substance, widely reported in circulating clips as urine or a similar noxious liquid, caused immediate chaos as the officers recoiled.

One eyewitness who spoke shortly after the incident remarked, “This one tried everything possible to avoid being held. It was unbelievable what he did just to get away.”

The video captured the officials’ stunned reaction and the driver’s attempt to flee the scene amid the confusion.

Such encounters between motorists and LASTMA personnel are not uncommon in Lagos, where heavy traffic, strict enforcement and occasional allegations of high-handedness on both sides frequently spark tensions.

The authority has in the past condemned violent resistance to its officers, while some drivers complain of aggressive tactics during arrests.

In this particular case, the man’s unorthodox and unhygienic resistance highlighted the frustrations that can boil over in one of the world’s most congested cities.

The clip sparked lively online discussions, with many condemning the act as reckless and disrespectful, while others saw it as a darkly comic example of resistance against perceived overreach.

LASTMA officials eventually gained control of the situation, though details of any formal charges or resolution remain unclear from public reports.

The incident served as a reminder of the intense pressures faced by both traffic managers striving to maintain order on chaotic roads and drivers navigating the stresses of daily commuting in Lagos.

Public health experts have occasionally warned against such desperate measures, noting the potential risks of spreading infections in crowded urban environments.

This event, while unusual, underscores the need for calmer approaches to traffic disputes in a city where enforcement plays a vital role in reducing accidents and gridlock.
