Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the Kano State Government have received a major boost in their voter mobilisation campaign after Kano emerged as Nigeria’s highest-ranking state for new voter registrations, recording 441,845 registrations under the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise as of June 15, 2026.
The figures were contained in a report presented in Kano on Thursday by the Sub-Committee on ICT and Data Collection, chaired by the Kano State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr Aliyu Isa Aliyu.
According to the report, Kano outperformed all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, highlighting a remarkable level of civic engagement and political participation among residents ahead of future electoral activities.
The committee attributed the achievement largely to sustained voter education campaigns and mobilisation initiatives introduced by the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Yusuf.
The report noted that the administration established a Voter Registration Task Force Committee in 2025 to encourage eligible citizens, particularly young people, to register and participate actively in the democratic process.
A detailed breakdown of registrations across Kano’s 44 local government areas showed that Bichi recorded the highest number of new voters with 30,806 registrations.
Kumbotso followed with 18,701 registrations, while Nasarawa recorded 18,184. Dawaki Tofa registered 17,748 new voters, Bagwai recorded 15,808, and Ungogo posted 15,584 registrations.
At the lower end of the rankings, Kunchi recorded 5,030 registrations, followed by Warawa with 5,462, Tsanyawa with 5,597, Garun Malam with 5,679 and Bunkure with 5,699.
The report observed that voter registration was particularly strong in urban and semi-urban areas, especially within the Kano metropolitan axis, where awareness campaigns and access to registration centres were more widespread.
The committee also highlighted the pivotal role played by youths, describing young voters as a driving force behind the impressive registration surge.
The development reflects growing political awareness among first-time voters and young adults seeking greater involvement in governance and public affairs.
Bichi Local Government Area received special recognition for its outstanding performance.
According to the report, the council accounted for approximately seven per cent of the state’s total registrations, making it one of the most successful voter mobilisation cases recorded during the exercise.
Dr Aliyu said the figures demonstrated the effectiveness of community-based engagement strategies and collaborative efforts between government officials, grassroots leaders and volunteers.
“The performance recorded across the state is a reflection of deliberate mobilisation efforts and increasing public awareness of the importance of voter registration,” the report stated.
To sustain the momentum, the committee recommended intensified voter education campaigns in local government areas with lower registration figures.
It also urged local authorities to expand youth engagement programmes and strengthen collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure the seamless completion of biometric registration procedures.
The latest figures provide a significant benchmark for electoral planning ahead of future elections and reinforce Kano’s status as one of Nigeria’s most politically active states.
Kano has historically recorded some of the country’s highest voter populations due to its large demographic base and strong political participation culture.
