Gabriel Martinelli scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Brazil secured a 2-1 victory over Japan to advance to the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup

Brazil booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner to defeat Japan 2-1 in a thrilling Round of 32 encounter at Houston Stadium on Monday 29 June 2026.

The five-time world champions were pushed to the brink by a disciplined Japanese side that took a first-half lead through Kota Sano in the 29th minute.

Japan frustrated Brazil for much of the contest and looked on course to force extra time before Brazil struck late to complete the comeback.

Brazil restored parity in the 56th minute when veteran midfielder Casemiro headed home from Gabriel Magalhães’ delivery to ignite Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The equaliser shifted momentum in Brazil’s favour as they piled pressure on Japan’s defence in search of a winner.

Just when the match appeared destined for extra time, Gabriel Martinelli produced the decisive moment in the sixth minute of added time.

Bruno Guimarães threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the Arsenal forward, who controlled brilliantly before firing past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory.

The late strike broke Japanese hearts after an impressive defensive display. Hajime Moriyasu’s men had absorbed sustained pressure for much of the second half but were unable to withstand Brazil’s final attacking surge.

The victory sends Brazil into the Round of 16, where they will face either Norway or Ivory Coast as they continue their quest for a record-extending sixth FIFA World Cup title.

This Brazil Japan match victory also preserved Brazil’s hopes of lifting the trophy, with the South Americans once again showing their ability to find crucial goals under pressure.
