Three suspects arrested over death of Kogi school teacher

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the killing of Mariam Usman, a teacher at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.

The development followed an investigation into the Kogi Teacher’s Killing case, which began after the police received a report concerning the death of the school staff member on June 25, 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, police spokesperson ASP Oyiza Afusat said detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lokoja, launched an investigation that led to the arrest of three suspects.

According to the police, investigations revealed that Mariam Usman was allegedly assaulted on June 17, 2026, by Abdullahi Isiaka at her residence over disciplinary action taken against his 11-year-old son during school hours.

The command further stated that the teacher was allegedly attacked later the same day while heading to a mosque for prayers by Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo.

Police investigations also indicated that Ojonojima Mary, the younger sister of Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, allegedly assaulted Mariam Usman at her workplace, Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, on June 18, 2026.

Following the reported attacks, the teacher was initially treated at Grace Clinic, Ugbamaka, before being referred to Eleojo Clinic, Okpo, for further medical attention. She later died from her injuries on June 25, 2026.

ASP Afusat said the investigation established a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide against the suspects.

“The investigation has been concluded, and the suspects will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction for prosecution,” she said.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, praised the efforts of detectives involved in the investigation, describing their work as professional and committed.

Kankarofi assured residents that the command would continue to pursue cases involving violent crimes and ensure that suspects are brought before the appropriate legal authorities.

He also urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands, advising residents to resolve disputes through lawful channels.

The police commissioner called for continued cooperation from residents, stressing that timely and credible information remains important in preventing crime and supporting investigations.
