Omar Artan earns european spotlight after world cup setback

Somali referee Omar Artan, aged 34, will take charge of the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, marking a significant return to the international spotlight after Artan was denied entry to the United States and missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The appointment gives Omar Artan an important opportunity to officiate on Europe’s biggest stage after a difficult summer that abruptly interrupted his World Cup ambitions.

Artan had been selected among FIFA’s international referees for the tournament in North America and was on course to become the first Somali official to referee at a World Cup.

That opportunity disappeared after Artan was refused entry to the United States at Miami International Airport in June.

US authorities said Artan was deemed inadmissible following additional screening because of what officials described as vetting concerns.

A US State Department official later told AFP that Artan was allegedly associated with suspected members of terrorist organisations.

Artan rejected the allegations.

FIFA also confirmed that Artan would be unable to participate in the tournament because he could not enter the host country.

The episode triggered an emotional response in Somalia, where Artan received a warm welcome from supporters after returning to Mogadishu.

The incident also drew international attention because Artan had established himself as one of Africa’s leading referees.

For Artan, the disappointment was profound.

“It was a very tough period,” Artan said in an interview published by UEFA.

“A lot of people have sympathy for me, because when someone has been working a lot of years and is supposed to do something, and then can’t do it, it’s very challenging.”

UEFA responded by offering Artan another major stage, appointing him to referee the Super Cup after discussions with the Confederation of African Football, CAF.

UEFA confirmed the appointment in June, describing Artan as one of the world’s top referees.

The fixture will bring together Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League winners Aston Villa at Stadion Salzburg, effectively opening the new European club season with a contest between two continental champions.

For Artan, the match represents his first European assignment and a remarkable opportunity to turn a painful setback into a memorable chapter in his career.

“I was lucky, but I have worked very hard to be here and I’m really proud,” Artan told UEFA.

The referee’s journey carries particular significance given his background.

Artan has spoken about growing up in difficult circumstances in Somalia and pursuing refereeing despite the obstacles around him.

“As you can imagine, I grew up in a difficult situation, but it didn’t prevent me from pursuing my dreams,” he said.

Artan has been on FIFA’s international list since 2018 and was named CAF Men’s Referee of the Year in 2025.

He also became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2024.

His Super Cup appointment also has a wider institutional context.

UEFA and CAF agreed in April to strengthen cooperation between the two confederations, providing a framework for closer collaboration between European and African football.

The timing has added another layer of significance to Artan’s appointment.

UEFA has recently been involved in an increasingly public dispute with FIFA President Gianni Infantino over FIFA’s abandoned proposal to introduce private investment into its competitions.

UEFA opposed the proposal strongly, with European football officials threatening a boycott of FIFA tournaments if the plan proceeded.

The dispute has intensified pressure on Infantino ahead of the FIFA presidential election in 2027.

Against that backdrop, Artan’s appointment has been viewed as both a sporting opportunity and a symbolic gesture from UEFA, although his credentials as a leading African referee remain the central basis for his selection.

Artan’s family has also shared in the significance of the moment.

He described receiving the appointment as an especially joyful occasion after the disappointment of the World Cup.

“When we got this call it was, for me and my family, really a very, very happy moment,” Artan said.

The Super Cup will therefore carry more weight for Artan than a routine assignment.

It will place a highly regarded Somali official at the centre of a major European fixture only weeks after an international setback prevented him from fulfilling one of the biggest ambitions of his career.

His journey from being turned away at Miami International Airport to preparing for a European showpiece is a powerful reminder of how quickly sporting careers can change.

On Wednesday, Artan will have the opportunity to let his performance on the pitch speak for itself.
