Cyriel Dessers, the 31-year-old Nigerian international and Panathinaikos striker, made a dramatic return to competitive football in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, scoring the decisive extra-time goal in a 2-1 victory over CSKA 1948 Sofia that sent the Greek club through to the UEFA Conference League play-off round.
For Dessers, the moment brought an emphatic end to almost six months of frustration on the sidelines. He came off the bench in the second half and needed only a short spell on the pitch to make the difference in a tense European tie.

Panathinaikos had entered the second leg following a 1-1 draw in the opening meeting.
Levi García put the visitors ahead after the interval, but CSKA 1948 Sofia levelled late in normal time through Georgian defender Lasha Dvali, forcing the contest into extra time.
Dessers then delivered the decisive moment.
Georgios Kyriakopoulos sent a cross into the area, with CSKA goalkeeper Petar Marinov unable to deal cleanly with the delivery.
Dessers controlled the loose ball with his chest before calmly finishing to give Panathinaikos a 2-1 lead that ultimately secured a 3-2 aggregate victory.
The goal was particularly significant because it came in Dessers’ first competitive appearance since a lengthy injury absence.

Panathinaikos had paid Rangers around €4.63 million for Dessers, making his limited involvement particularly frustrating for both the player and the club.
When Dessers returned to full training in July, he spoke openly about the challenge of spending so much time injured.
“It has been difficult, a season with many injuries. For the first time in my career, actually, so I had to get used to that,” Dessers said.
The striker also made clear that he wanted to repay the faith shown in him by Panathinaikos and its supporters.
“Especially because the club paid a nice transfer fee for me, I just want to give something back to them.
For the fans, too, of course,” he said.
His return could hardly have been more timely.
Dessers had previously said he hoped to feature in Panathinaikos’ European qualifying campaign before the Greek Super League season began.
That ambition was realised sooner than expected, with his first competitive appearance ending in a potentially season-defining contribution.
The victory also keeps Panathinaikos’ European campaign alive after a demanding two-legged contest against the Bulgarian side.
The Greek club will now advance to the Conference League play-off round, where it is set to face the loser of the Europa League qualifying tie between Hradec Králové and Beşiktaş.
Beyond the result, the night offered Dessers a powerful reminder of what he can contribute when fit.
After months spent recovering and rebuilding his fitness, the Nigerian forward returned to the stage with a composed finish at the moment Panathinaikos needed him most.
The comeback also provides a welcome boost for Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle, with the Super Eagles preparing for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September.
A fit and confident Dessers gives Chelle another experienced attacking option as Nigeria prepare for the next phase of their international schedule.
For Panathinaikos, the priority will now be managing Dessers’ return carefully after such a prolonged absence. For the player himself, however, the first step could scarcely have been better.
