The Grammy-winning Afrobeats star will reportedly headline the 13-day festival’s opening night on December 18, with a new stage planned for emerging artists.

Wizkid to kick off 13-day Detty December celebration

LAGOS, Nigeria, August 14, 2026: Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, is set to headline the opening night of Detty December Fest 2026 in Lagos on December 18, according to festival organisers, placing one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars at the centre of the 13-day celebration.

The 2026 edition is scheduled to run from December 18 to December 30, bringing together music, food, fashion, culture and entertainment as Lagos prepares for another busy festive season.

According to Livespot360, Wizkid will perform on the main Festival Stage on the opening night, while a newly introduced Pulse Stage will provide space for emerging artists and new sounds.

“Wizkid will headline the main Festival Stage, while the newly introduced Pulse Stage will provide a platform for emerging artists, new sounds and breakthrough talents shaping the future of African music,” the organisers said.

The addition of a second stage represents one of the major changes planned for the 2026 festival.

Rather than focusing exclusively on established stars, organisers say the Pulse Stage will give younger performers an opportunity to reach a wider audience.

Wizkid’s involvement gives the festival a powerful opening-night attraction.

The singer, who became one of Afrobeats’ most recognisable global figures through hits including Ojuelegba, Come Closer and Essence, has maintained a strong international presence throughout his career.

His Grammy recognition has further cemented his position in contemporary African music, while collaborations with international artists have helped broaden the global audience for Nigerian Afrobeats.

The announcement also comes after the festival’s 2025 edition, which organisers said attracted more than 40,000 festival-goers.

The event featured a broad line-up of Nigerian, African and international performers, including Busta Rhymes, Gunna, Shenseea, Tiwa Savage, Diamond Platnumz, Phyno and Wande Coal.

The scale of the previous edition reflected the growing importance of December entertainment to Lagos’s cultural and tourism economy.

Detty December has developed beyond a collection of concerts into a wider seasonal phenomenon involving nightlife, hospitality, restaurants, fashion, travel and cultural experiences.

Research and reporting on the 2025 festive period highlighted the substantial economic activity generated across hotels, transport, entertainment and related services.

For Lagos, the annual influx of visitors also presents challenges.

Higher transport and accommodation costs, congestion and pressure on infrastructure have increasingly become part of the December experience, particularly as demand rises sharply during the festive period.

The organisers’ decision to expand the festival programme therefore comes at a time when audiences are becoming increasingly diverse, with established Afrobeats followers sharing spaces with younger listeners looking for new acts.

The Pulse Stage could become an important part of that evolution if it successfully introduces emerging performers to the large audiences expected during the festival.

Wizkid’s opening-night performance is likely to draw significant attention, particularly from Nigerian fans returning home for the festive period and international visitors travelling to Lagos for its December entertainment calendar.

The wider December programme is expected to feature numerous concerts, festivals and cultural events across Lagos, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a major destination for African music and nightlife during the holiday season.

For the festival’s organisers, the combination of an internationally established headliner and a platform for new talent appears designed to balance star power with discovery.

For Wizkid, the December appearance will provide another major opportunity to connect with Nigerian audiences in one of the country’s most vibrant entertainment periods.

With the opening night scheduled for December 18, anticipation is already building around what promises to be one of the festival’s headline moments.

The 2026 Detty December Fest will ultimately run for 13 days, ending on December 30, with organisers positioning the expanded programme as a broader celebration of African music, creativity and culture.

If the 2025 turnout is any indication, Wizkid’s opening-night appearance could give the 2026 edition a spectacular start while the new Pulse Stage gives the next generation of African artists a chance to share the spotlight.
