Experts warn automation could shrink hiring opportunities for young Nigerians even as new technology jobs emerge
Nigeria is approaching a pivotal Nigeria AI jobs transition as millions of young people enter the labour market while artificial intelligence increasingly takes over routine tasks that have traditionally provided the first rung on the professional ladder.

From banking and fintech to insurance, accounting, customer service, recruitment, media and software development, Nigerian companies are deploying AI to perform work once handled largely by junior employees.
The immediate consequence may not be a wave of mass redundancies. Instead, experts warn that businesses could simply begin hiring fewer people for entry-level positions.
Gbolabo Awelewa, Chief Business Officer of esentry, described the emerging pattern as “quiet displacement”, where companies automate tasks before eventually adjusting their staffing requirements.
“The first person displaced by AI may not be the person whose job disappears. It may be the person who is going to be hired next,” technology entrepreneur and blockchain advocate Chimezie Chuta said.
That distinction could prove crucial for Nigeria, where a large and youthful population needs millions of new employment opportunities each year.
A Nigeria-focused economic review previously reported by The Sun found that 93 per cent of surveyed organisations had started their AI journey, while 31 per cent had reached advanced integration.
The review projected that automation could place about nine million routine jobs at risk by 2030, particularly in banking, clerical services and public administration.
At the same time, it estimated that about 11 million technology-enabled jobs could emerge if Nigeria invests adequately in skills development and reskilling.
Financial services are already among the most visible areas of transformation.
United Bank for Africa’s digital assistant, Leo, allows customers to check balances, transfer money, pay bills and manage accounts without direct assistance from bank staff. UBA says the service has more than three million users across Africa.
Other banks, including FirstBank and Zenith Bank, have also introduced digital assistants, while fintech companies are increasingly using AI for analytics, fraud detection and customer engagement.
The Central Bank of Nigeria further signalled the direction of travel in March 2026 when it issued standards for automated anti-money laundering, counter-terrorist financing and counter-proliferation financing solutions.
The standards provide requirements for systems capable of detecting and analysing suspicious activities in real time, potentially reducing the need for manual monitoring.
Awelewa identified customer service, transaction analysis, fraud detection and AI-assisted credit scoring as areas experiencing particularly rapid change.
Chuta said financial services were highly exposed because the industry combines large quantities of structured data, repetitive processes and strong commercial incentives to lower operating costs.
Reconciliation, transaction categorisation, financial analysis, report generation, fraud detection, compliance monitoring and document review are all tasks increasingly suited to automation.
Customer service could become one of the most visible examples.
AI systems can handle large volumes of predictable enquiries, leaving human employees to deal with complicated cases requiring judgement, empathy or negotiation.
The same shift is occurring across other sectors.
Data entry, document summarisation, transcription, translation, routine report writing, bookkeeping, claims processing, compliance screening and scheduling are among the activities increasingly vulnerable to task automation.
For young Nigerians, the consequences could be particularly profound.
A junior accountant traditionally learns by reconciling records. A young banker gains experience by reviewing documents.
A customer-service officer starts by handling routine enquiries, while a junior journalist may begin by researching basic stories.
These tasks can be repetitive, but they are also training grounds.
If companies can use AI to complete much of that work, they may require fewer junior employees to achieve the same level of output.
“Companies are not announcing mass AI-driven layoffs, but many are likely to need fewer new hires for roles that AI can now handle,” Awelewa said.
The global labour market is already placing pressure on young workers.
The International Labour Organisation’s latest youth employment report put global youth unemployment at 12.4 per cent in 2025, representing about 67 million people aged 15 to 24.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects that 170 million jobs could be created globally by 2030, against 92 million jobs displaced.
It also estimates that 39 per cent of workers’ existing skills could be transformed or become outdated by the end of the decade.
For Nigeria, the challenge is therefore broader than protecting workers whose jobs disappear.
It is also about creating pathways into employment for graduates whose traditional entry-level opportunities may become increasingly scarce.
Insurance and accounting face similar pressures because both sectors rely heavily on processing structured information.
Claims administration, invoice processing, document checks, reconciliation and basic financial analysis can increasingly be performed with automated systems.
The media industry is also undergoing a significant transformation.
AI tools can transcribe interviews, translate material, summarise documents, assist research, generate headlines, analyse datasets, produce images and create preliminary drafts.
Chuta does not expect journalism itself to disappear.
Instead, he believes the value of journalists will increasingly rest on original sourcing, verification, investigation, context, analysis, editorial judgement and credibility.
Software development is facing a similar evolution.
AI coding assistants can generate code, write tests, document software and help developers identify and correct errors.
For Nigerian programmers, the bigger question may therefore be whether companies will require as many junior developers to deliver the same volume of software.
The implications extend beyond Nigeria’s domestic labour market.
The country’s growing remote-work economy has enabled Nigerians to earn from international employers as developers, designers, writers, analysts, virtual assistants and customer-support professionals.
AI could challenge that advantage if foreign employers begin automating services that were previously outsourced to Nigerian workers.
“The entire model rests on the scarcity of human intelligence. And that scarcity is collapsing,” Chuta wrote in an essay on Nigeria’s future in an AI-driven economy.
A World Bank analysis estimates that about 28 million Nigerian workers will require digital skills by 2030, equivalent to roughly 45 per cent of jobs.
Awelewa argues that the response should go beyond teaching Nigerians how to code.
“AI literacy should become as fundamental as digital literacy,” he said.
That means bankers understanding AI-assisted financial services, accountants learning to work alongside automated systems, insurance professionals understanding AI-supported underwriting and claims processing, and journalists learning to use AI without surrendering human verification and editorial responsibility.
There is some encouragement in the way Nigerian workers are already adapting.
The 2026 Global Outsourcing AI Readiness Index ranked Nigeria sixth among 25 major outsourcing destinations for workforce AI literacy, while placing the country 19th for enterprise AI adoption.
The gap suggests that Nigerian workers may be adopting AI tools faster than many businesses are integrating them into their wider operations.
Yet familiarity with AI does not automatically translate into employability in emerging technical fields.
AI and machine-learning specialists, big-data specialists, fintech engineers and software developers are expected to be among the fastest-growing occupations globally through 2030.
Workers displaced from routine roles, however, will not automatically possess the skills required for those positions.
Chuta has called for a national workforce-transition strategy that identifies occupations most exposed to automation and begins retraining workers before displacement occurs.
He has also advocated industry-specific retraining, with banks training banking professionals, insurers retraining insurance workers and media organisations equipping journalists with AI-related skills.
Awelewa believes Nigeria must go further by developing and owning AI capabilities through local data, research, infrastructure and commercialisation.
The challenge is particularly significant because informal employment accounts for 93 per cent of employment, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Nigeria’s AI employment debate therefore cannot be confined to formal corporate workplaces.
The bigger question is whether the productivity gains generated by AI will be accompanied by enough new economic opportunities for a rapidly expanding working-age population.
A customer-service department may need fewer agents.
A bank may require fewer people to manually review transactions. An insurer could automate claims processing, while an accountant could process substantially more records in less time.
That does not necessarily mean entire professions will disappear.
It does mean the economics of employment could change significantly.
For Nigeria’s young workforce, the most profound risk may therefore not be the employee who receives a termination letter.
It could be the graduate who never receives the first job offer.

As Chuta put it: “We shouldn’t be trying to save yesterday’s jobs from AI. We should be preparing today’s workers to qualify for tomorrow’s jobs.”
