Tinubu begins 3-week Europe holiday amid criticism

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of Nigeria, departed Abuja for Europe on Sunday, August 30, 2026, beginning a three-week annual leave that will take him first to London as political activity intensifies ahead of the January 2027 general election.

The Tinubu Europe holiday comes at a politically significant moment, with the President’s All Progressives Congress already moving into campaign preparations for his bid for a second term.

According to Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria after the working vacation to participate in what the Presidency described as an increasingly demanding campaign for the 2027 election.

The departure also follows several major developments at home, including Tinubu’s recent directive for a comprehensive forensic audit of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, ministries and federal agencies after the discovery of fictitious government agencies within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

The timing has drawn political criticism, particularly from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate.

Atiku argued that the President’s three-week absence was difficult to reconcile with the economic and security pressures facing Nigerians, especially because Vice President Kashim Shettima had also recently been outside the country on official business.

“Leadership is not merely the constitutional right to occupy an office; it is the judgment to know when your country needs you at home,” Atiku said in a statement published on his verified X account.

Atiku pointed to high petrol prices, food hardship, rising transport costs and insecurity as issues requiring sustained presidential attention.

He said his criticism was not directed at presidential travel itself, but at what he regarded as the timing of Tinubu’s absence.

The former Vice President used a vivid comparison to make his argument, saying: “A father may travel when all is well. But when his roof is burning and his family is trapped inside, he does not pick up his suitcase and head for the airport.”

He went further, accusing the administration of being detached from the difficulties experienced by ordinary Nigerians.

“It is that Nigeria is burning, and the President has chosen a boarding pass over the fire extinguisher,” Atiku said.

The Presidency has presented a markedly different picture of the trip.

Speaking to journalists before Tinubu’s departure at the Presidential Wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications Sunday Dare described the leave as deserved after months of demanding official duties.

“The President has had several months, six, seven months, of being engaged with state matters,” Dare said, pointing to decisions involving security, the economy and other areas of government.

Dare also acknowledged the political timing but argued that the holiday would allow Tinubu to regain energy before several months of campaigning.

“At this point, the campaign season has just started. We have four, five months of serious campaigning,” Dare said. “Of course, governance will still continue, and at this point, it’s important that the President also refuels.”

The Presidency has further stressed that Tinubu will remain engaged with government affairs while abroad.

Dare said the President would receive regular briefings from ministers, service chiefs and other officials responsible for key national decisions.

The holiday comes shortly after the APC formally constituted its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.

Tinubu was named chairman, while Shettima was appointed vice chairman and former Zamfara State governor Abdulaziz Yari was named Director-General. Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma was appointed secretary.

The formation of the council has already generated political debate, including questions about the involvement of serving public officials in campaign roles.

The development underscores how quickly Nigeria’s political machinery is moving towards the 2027 contest.

Tinubu’s current leave is not his first extended break abroad since taking office.

His previous holiday began on December 28, 2025, when he spent time in France before travelling to the United Arab Emirates for Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and subsequently visiting Turkey.

Shettima also recently completed a two-week leave that began on August 6. His office said the break was intended to provide time for study, reflection and renewal, and he returned to Nigeria ahead of his scheduled resumption date.

For Tinubu, the three-week European break therefore arrives at the intersection of government, personal rest and an increasingly competitive political season.

The Presidency maintains that governance will continue during his absence and that the President will remain briefed on important national matters.

His critics, meanwhile, see the trip as an opportunity to question whether the administration is sufficiently responsive to the pressures confronting Nigerians.

With the 2027 campaign now gathering momentum, the dispute over the Tinubu Europe holiday is likely to form part of a wider political argument over the President’s record, priorities and leadership style as he seeks a second term.

Atiku has already framed his alternative message in stark terms, declaring: “Tinubu made Nigeria expensive. I will make Nigeria affordable again.”

This version keeps the tone measured while giving both the Presidency and Atiku clear space to make their respective cases.
