Washington, D.C., United States, has become the centre of an increasingly influential career for Dr Karl Von Batten, the Nigerian-born founder and managing partner of Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., a Washington-based policy advisory and lobbying firm whose work has taken him into American foreign policy, African affairs and Nigerian politics.
Von Batten has emerged as a notable figure in Washington’s lobbying ecosystem, particularly because of his work on African political and diplomatic issues.

US government records identify him as the founder of Von Batten-Montague-York, while a 2022 registration filed under the Foreign Agents Registration Act identified his name as Dr Karl-Marx Edward Okeke-Von Batten and stated that he held 100 per cent controlling interests in the firm.
The filing described the company’s business as a policy advisory and advocacy firm.
Public professional profiles give a longer version of his name as Karl-Marx Edward Ikemefuna William George Okeke-Von Batten.
That form is also reflected in lobbying databases and professional profiles associated with him.
However, claims circulating on social media that he was born in Nigeria, originally carried a different surname and adopted “Von Batten” after marrying an American woman, Elizabeth Von Batten, require caution.
Those assertions appear in social-media posts and some secondary reports, but the sources reviewed do not provide sufficiently strong primary documentation to establish the circumstances of the name change as fact.
Von Batten has also disputed at least part of the surname narrative when contacted by another publication.
What is firmly documented is Von Batten’s role in Washington’s lobbying and foreign-agent registration system.
The firm’s activities have included representing foreign governments and organisations on issues ranging from trade and international relations to regional security and political advocacy.
In 2024, Von Batten-Montague-York submitted comments to the US Trade Representative concerning Somalia’s eligibility for benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act.
The document stated that the firm had been engaged by Somalia’s embassy in Washington in 2022 and by the Somali Parliament’s House of the People in 2023.
The firm’s work has also extended to the Democratic Republic of Congo. US Foreign Agents Registration Act records show Von Batten-Montague-York acting for the office of the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Those activities have made Von Batten a vocal participant in debates involving the Horn of Africa, African governments and US foreign policy.
His own public statements frequently address issues involving Somalia, Somaliland, Ethiopia, Nigeria and the wider African political landscape.
In November 2023, for example, Von Batten used his X account to discuss Somaliland and Somalia and said his firm intended to use “every legal tool at our disposal” in opposing the Somaliland administration’s position.
His influence became particularly relevant to Nigeria in 2026, when former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar engaged Von Batten-Montague-York in a $1.2 million lobbying agreement.
US filings and reports on the agreement show that the 12-month engagement was signed in March 2026.
The firm’s mandate included protecting and strengthening Atiku’s reputational standing in the United States, counterbalancing the Nigerian government’s lobbying narratives and helping US policymakers understand Atiku’s political position and policy vision.
The agreement placed Von Batten at the intersection of Washington lobbying and Nigeria’s emerging 2027 presidential contest.
His firm’s work included government-affairs engagement with members of Congress and executive-branch officials on democratic governance, regional stability, economic development and US engagement with Nigeria and West Africa.
Von Batten has openly defended the arrangement and argued that US engagement can play a constructive role in protecting electoral integrity.
In an interview reported by The Africa Report, he said: “The US plays a very important role,” while stressing that Atiku did not want Washington to determine the outcome of Nigeria’s election.
He also said, “If he loses, he loses. If he wins, he wins,” describing the concern as ensuring that the election was not manipulated.
The political relationship has continued to attract attention because Von Batten has publicly criticised aspects of the Nigerian government’s conduct while simultaneously working for one of its most prominent political opponents.
That commercial relationship is important context whenever Von Batten comments publicly on Nigerian politics.
His views may be strongly expressed, but they should not automatically be treated as those of an independent observer because his firm has a documented financial relationship with Atiku Abubakar.
The connection became even more prominent in July 2026 when Von Batten-Montague-York offered assistance to Adeniyi Adeyemi, the embattled figure at the centre of the controversy surrounding the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.
The firm said it was prepared to assist Adeyemi with asylum and whistleblower protection while drawing attention to allegations he had made concerning Nigerian officials.
Nigerian authorities, meanwhile, were pursuing their own investigation into the disputed organisation and allegations surrounding its activities.
The episode illustrated the increasingly international character of Von Batten’s work.
A Washington lobbyist with an established network of foreign-government and political clients was now engaging with a contentious domestic Nigerian political affair.
There is also a documented history of legal disputes involving Von Batten. In May 2026, a US District Court for the District of Columbia issued an order in Karl Von Batten’s lawsuit against Grey Team Inc. and others.
The court granted the defendants’ motion to dismiss in part and denied it in part, while allowing Von Batten to submit a surreply.
The case concerned claims including alleged extortion, intentional infliction of emotional distress, tortious interference with business relations and fraud.
Questions have also been raised online about Von Batten’s academic credentials.
His public professional profiles describe him as a senior government adviser and associate him with Columbia University, while other online publications have questioned the authenticity of some of those claims.
Those allegations remain contested and should not be presented as proven without authoritative university or documentary confirmation.
What the public record does establish is more straightforward. Karl Von Batten is a Washington-based lobbyist and policy adviser who founded Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., a firm that has registered to represent foreign governments, organisations and political interests before US institutions.
His career has placed him in an increasingly powerful position between African political actors and Washington policymakers.
His work for Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and, more recently, Atiku Abubakar demonstrates the breadth of that role.
As Nigeria moves towards the 2027 presidential election, that Washington connection is likely to remain significant.
For Von Batten, the coming political cycle offers another major arena in which lobbying, foreign policy, reputation management and Nigerian domestic politics intersect.
